Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Bristol, ME.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Bristol that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
