Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - East Livermore, ME.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in East Livermore which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
