American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Glen Cove face is access to comprehensive and effective treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded areas. Facilities providing drug and alcohol rehab services in rural regions commonly are not capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which types of treatment services are available to them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
