Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - North Waterford, ME.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in North Waterford that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
