Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Norway, ME.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Norway which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
