Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Prospect Harbor, ME.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Prospect Harbor which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
