Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - South Gardiner, ME.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in South Gardiner that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
