American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Central Lake face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded areas. Programs offering substance abuse treatment services in rural regions commonly are not able to offer support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which services are available to them through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
