American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges.
