The military currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.
By way of TRICARE, members of the military can obtain drug and alcohol treatment services in East Lansing. This encompasses detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other treatment services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but inpatient services for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detoxification will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military insurance carriers are allowed to stay in rehab.
