The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can pick a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.

Through TRICARE, members of the military can obtain drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Grand Haven. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there will most likely be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detoxification are limited to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members will be permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually allowed. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished prior treatment services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
