American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail time. So as you can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
