American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Kingsley face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Facilities offering substance abuse rehab services in rural regions may not be able to offer strategic planning intended for the needs of this special demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which services are available to them through which rehab facilities, and which will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
