American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Lake face is access to comprehensive rehab programs, particularly those who live in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering strategic planning designed to meet the needs and demands of this unique group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which services are available to them through which treatment facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
