American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail time. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Rockwood face is access to comprehensive and effective treatment facilities, especially those who live in rural locations. Programs providing substance abuse treatment services in rural regions commonly are not set up to provide strategic planning designed to meet the needs of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which services are an option for them through which treatment facilities, and which will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
