Medicare is a federal health insurance program which helps pay for health benefits for people living in the Unites States who are either disabled or 65 and older. Medicare consists of different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering certain forms of treatment.

Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A pays for inpatient substance treatment, and up to 60 days in treatment without a co-pay but policy holders will have to pay a deductible. Medicare only covers a total of 190 days of inpatient care, as in during the person's lifetime.

Part B (Medical Insurance) ? Medicare Part B covers up to 80% of the expenses associated with outpatient substance abuse treatment. This includes outpatient care, therapy/counseling, treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety and drugs administered by clinics. It also covers professional intervention services.

Part C (Medicare-approved Private Insurance) Medicare Part D is an option for clients who want supplemental health insurance aside from what the other parts of Medicare have to offer. Individuals who have Part C may have more options available to them, but out-of-pocket costs and coverage is different and may be more expensive.

Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D covers drug and alcohol addiction medications. Including medications needed for drug and alcohol withdrawal as well as medications required for maintenance therapy such as methadone or buprenorphine.
