American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Grove City face is access to comprehensive and effective rehab programs, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Programs offering addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions commonly are not able to offer support aimed at meeting the needs of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their native language.
