American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Meadowlands face is access to effective services, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Facilities offering addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering support intended for the needs of this unique demographic including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to find out which types of treatment services are available to them through which treatment facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants approved in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
