American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
