Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Adrian, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Adrian which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
