Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Auxvasse, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Auxvasse that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
