Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Black Jack, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Black Jack which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
