Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Bolckow, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Bolckow that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
