Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Calverton Park, MO.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Calverton Park which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
