Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Fair Grove, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Fair Grove which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
