Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Gower, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Gower which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
