Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Lakeshire, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lakeshire which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
