Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Liberty, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Liberty that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
