Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Lockwood, MO.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Lockwood which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
