Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Lucerne, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Lucerne which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
