The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and obtain referrals to health care services that offer specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can acquire substance abuse rehabilitation services in Mexico. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various rehabilitation services. They will require pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers will be allowed to stay in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically allowed. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other primary treatment services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
