Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Mound City, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Mound City that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
