Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Oronogo, MO.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Oronogo that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
