Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Palmyra, MO.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Palmyra which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
