Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Pilot Knob, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Pilot Knob that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
