Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Purcell, MO.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Purcell which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
