Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Risco, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Risco that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
