Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Rockaway Beach, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Rockaway Beach which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
