Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Sarcoxie, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Sarcoxie which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
