Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Stet, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Stet which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
