Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Wyatt, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Wyatt that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
