Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Zanoni, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Zanoni that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
