Outpatient Methadone Buprenorphine or Vivitrol - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - University, MS.

One of the out-patient treatment options for clients in University who are struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed facilities and doctors are authorized to administer specific medications to opioid dependent clients, many of which are opioid-based themselves and are addiction. In low amounts the individual doesn't experience being high and also does not have acute cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication used for this sole purpose, but there are a few more options to choose from.

Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an out-patient medical center licensed to dispense the drug, which is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The price of the drug is around $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is in pill form often taken one day on, one day off. But unlike Methadone that can only be dispensed in highly structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is approximately $300 a month for the generic of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine containing the drug naloxone, that is a med which reverses the effects of opioids. A person taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken on a daily basis, and is priced about $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional drug taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it is an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this medication as a monthly shot, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from getting high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
