Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Angela, MT.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Angela which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
