Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Biddle, MT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Biddle which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
