Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Dagmar, MT.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Dagmar which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
