Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Eureka, MT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Eureka which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
