Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Kalispell which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
