Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Lindsay, MT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lindsay that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
