Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Loring, MT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Loring that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
